Concerns rise over drought in Iran’s major parts

National Drought Warning and Monitoring Center (NDWMC) of Iran has warned against drought in the country particularly in the major population centers such as capital Tehran.

Shahrokh Fateh, the head of NDWMC has said that about 84 percent of the total area of Iran suffers from different levels of drought, ISNA news agency reported.

According to Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), various parts of the country faced different levels of drought between Nov 21, 2015 and Nov 21, 2016.

According to the statistics, about ten percent of the total area of the country is at the risk of extreme drought.

Shahrokh Fateh further called for improving the water consumption pattern in the country and added that the provinces of Tehran, Fars, Esfahan, Yazd, Kerman, and East Azerbaijan alongside with a dozen of other provinces suffer from extreme drought.

According to the report, 41 percent of the country’s total area faces moderate drought, while three percent of the country is in the stage of wet condition and 14 percent in normal situation.
