Iran, Russia sign MOU on fishery co-op

Iran and Russia signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in fishery sector.

The deal was signed by Iran’s deputy agriculture minister, Hassan Salehi, and deputy head of Russia’s Federal Agency for Fishery, Vasily Sokolov, in Tehran, IRIB news agency reported Apr. 18.

Under the MOU, the two parties will cooperate in trade and research areas of fishery sector.

Salehi, who heads Iran’s Fisheries Organization, said the two countries will launch joint research into protection and reserve assessment of sturgeons and sprats.

Russia and Iran will also cooperate in fishing in deep waters in Oman Sea and processing of fishery products as well as in establishing trade terminals in the region, Salehi added.

He further said that within the framework of the agreement the two countries will hold joint meetings with other Caspian states, in particular Azerbaijan, to study protection and restoration of the Caspian Sea’s reserves.

Given the large Russian seafood market, grounds will be prepared for export of seafood products from Iran to Russia, Salehi added.
