Iran plans to cut liquid fuels burning in all thermal power plants and supply those plants with natural gas only, Vice-President of Iran and Head of Environmental Protection Organization Masoumeh Ebtekar said.

She added that the share of liquid fuels in power sector decreased from 45 percent in 2012 to 8 percent last fiscal year (ended March 20), SHANA reported.

Her statement comes as Iran, according to Energy Ministry’s weekly reports, has already consumed 120 million liters of gas oil and fuel oil in power sector from March 21 to April 28.

However, during the mentioned period, Iran increased gas supply to power plants by 19.2 percent to 5.992 billion cubic meters and decreased fuel oil and gas oil supply by 75.8 percent and 36.3 percent to 59 million and 61 million liters, respectively.

Ebtekar said that the flaring amount in the country would reach zero in two years. Currently, the flaring amount in Iran is about 12 billion cubic meters, of which a third is the associated gas burning in torches.
