Official talks transport infrastructure development in Chabahar port

An official with Iran’s southeastern free trade zone of Chabahar, has underlined the need for the development of transportation infrastructure in order to facilitate the trade zone’s activity.

The head of Chabahar Free Trade Zone, Abdolrahim Kordi, has said that the development of rail, roads, maritime and air transportation are the most important needs of the trade zone, Iran's YJC (Young Journalists Club) reported.

The construction of an international airport, completing the railway of Chabahr-Sarakhs and the inauguration of the development project of Shahid Beheshti port as well as the construction of Chabahr-Milak freeway would contribute to the economic and trade situation of the region, he said.

Kordi further added that the construction of Chabahar-Zahedan railway has already been completed by 27 percent.

In the meantime, the authorities have issued permission for the construction of the international airport in the region, he added.

Elaborating on the transportation situation of the region, he added that about $1 billion has been spent on the first phase of the development project of Shahid Beheshti port which is expected to come on stream in the near future.

The capacity of the port will reach 8.5 million tons after the inauguration of the first phase of the development project.

The country in the meantime is planning to launch projects for construction of petrochemical plants with a total capacity of 8.5 million tons and steel plants with the capacity of 10 million tons per year.
