Brief review of employment in Iran

Iran’s Statistical Center has published its annual report about employment situation in the country, which covers the fiscal year from March 20, 2017 to March 20, 2018.

According to the report, the number of unemployed Iranians aged over 10 years ‎reached 3.21 million in the last fiscal year.‎

The unemployment rate among Iranians aged over 10 years in the mentioned period was 12.1 percent, 0.3 percent less compared to the preceding year.

All Iranians aged over 10 years, who worked at least one hour a week, or temporary left their work during the survey week, were included as "employed labor force" in the report.

The country's labor force participation rate stood at 40.3 percent (0.9 percent more than the preceding year), equal to 26.59 million.

The participation rate is the percentage of working-age persons in an economy who are employed or unemployed but looking for a job.

Unemployment among men (2.172 million) and women (1.04 million) was also around 10.2 and 19.8 percent, respectively, during the period.

According to the report, the country's labor force participation rate for men (21.356 million) and women (5.233 million) was 64.5 percent and 16 percent, respectively by March 2018.

The country's urban and rural unemployment rate in the mentioned period stood at 13.4 and 8.2 percent, respectively.

The participation rate for country’s urban (19.63 million) and rural (6.95 million) areas also reached 39.7 percent and 42.4 percent, respectively in the same period.

The report indicates that over half of Iran’s labor force was employed in the service sector (11.78 million or 50.4 percent).

About 17.6 percent of the country's labor force was employed in the agriculture sector (4.11 million), while 32 percent were employed in the industry (7.488 million) sector.

In total 23.38 million people were employed in various sectors in the country in the last fiscal year (35.5 percent).

Iran’s western Kermanshah province had the highest unemployment rate in the last fiscal year (21.6 percent), meanwhile central Semnan and Markazi provinces witnessed the lowest unemployment rate in the period (7.9 percent).
