Iran’s Central Bank (CBI) has decreased the legal ceiling of foreign currency that passengers can take with themselves while exiting the country.

The CBI said in a statement that passengers, who leave the country by air can carry 5,000 euros or its equivalent in other currencies. The legal ceiling was already 10,000 euros.

Meanwhile the ceiling for passengers, who leave the country via land, rail and sea borders, is decreased to 2,000 euros.

Passengers, who enter the country can bring with themselves 10,000 euros or its equivalent as the past, according to the statement.

Travellers who bring the higher amount of foreign currency, must declare it at the border check point.

In April the Iranian government decided to unify the country’s official and open market exchange rates.

The decision was made following fluctuations in the country after the rial declined to an all-time low.

Following that the government put the price of the US dollar at 42,000 rials in both markets, and for all business activities.

The CBI also banned offering foreign currencies in exchange shops across the country.

The administration also imposed a 10,000-euro ($12,400) ceiling on the amount of foreign currency that citizens can hold outside banks.
