Iran has started importing 1.4 million tons of sugar, said Bahman Danaei, secretary of Iranian Sugar Factories Syndicate, Trend reports via Mehr News Agency.

He said that imports for 800,000 tons of sugar have been registered.

“Presently, 6 ships have moored at Imam Khomeini, Chabahar and Bandar Abbas ports,” he noted. “Thus, 800-900,000 tons of sugar will be imported to Iran during this month.”

He added that sugar is mainly imported from India.

He noted that Iran needs 2.2 million tons of sugar per year.

He said that 100-110,000 tons of sugar will be produced in Iran. Also, 150-160,000 tons of sugar will be obtained from the remaining sugar cane, he added.

Thus, it is expected that the sugar prices will decline next month in Iran, he noted.

The prices for sugar in Iran have risen since early March. Presently, 900 grams of sugar are sold in the Iranian cities for 90,000-105,000 rials ($2.14-$2.5 according to official rate and $0.6-$0.7 in the black market).
