Iran's free trade zones require private sector investments - President Rouhani

Development of free trade zones should be encouraged and economic security should be created for the private sector, said the Iranian President.

The government emphasizes that economic development of free zones should be done by encouraging the private sector with encouraging and creating economic security, said Hassan Rouhani, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"The structure of state economy for managing free trade zones would be damaging," he said in his meeting with the government economic coordination headquarters.

The meeting's agenda was to discuss suggestions for removing obstacles for production in free and special economic zones in the country.

"The change in the economic activities of free zones should be through development mechanism and attracting foreign investment, creating trust and flexibility for marketing, and continue participation in regional and global markets," Rouhani noted.

He went on to add that the structure of state economy in free zones would reduce the possibility of guiding investments and quantity management that could be damaging. "Improving the private sector and monitoring transparency by following international regulations would create trust in businessmen and motivates them to invest more in these zones."

"It is necessary to create a proper environment compatible with international and regional organizations and international trade norms. Increase of investor confidence and reducing political tensions would increase the possible development of production and export and cut reliance on oil export," Rohani stressed.

"There should be ground to remove major obstacles in foreign policy so the economy in these zones would not be deprived of the foreign and regional investments," he added.
