Iran sees increase in production of thermal power plants

TEHRAN, Iran, July. 7

Trend:

Since the beginning of the current Iranian year (started on March 21), despite a 16 percent increase in electricity production of thermal power plants, the country faced an issue on supplying electricity, managing director of Iran's Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH) said.

Over 36 percent of the gas produced in the country is consumed by thermal power plants, Mohsen Tarztaleb said at the opening ceremony of the Tabas coal-fired power plant mine, Trend reports citing Mehr News Agency.

“Since the beginning of this year, 16 percent more fuel has been used in power plants than in the same period last year, so the production of thermal power plants has increased by the same amount compared to the previous year,” he noted.

He went on to warn that if Iran continues to consume fuel in the country in the same way, we will surely have more problems.

Tarztalab asked the government to reconsider fuel management and diversify the country's energy portfolio.

According to the country`s macro plan, he says that 5,000 megawatts of coal-fired power plants should be built in the country.

He expressed hope that the Tabas power plant will be opened in 2024.

Pointing out that the 650 MW Tabas power plant will be put into operation in 2024, Tarztalab said that by constructing this complex and using coal to generate electricity, about 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas will be saved annually, which is equivalent to savings of 260 million euros.

He added that the total cost of construction of this power plant will be about 650 million to 700 million euros.

He announced the MAPNA Company as the main contractor of power plant establishment.

Tarztalab said that $4.2 billion should be invested in the Tabas power plant project within the next four years.

Referring to the readiness of the country's major industries to build 10,000 megawatts of new power plants using private sector investment, Tarztaleb said that industrial sectors are interested in building non-gas powered plants.
