Iran's caviar production increases

TEHRAN, Iran, July 19

Trend:

Iran's caviar production has reached more than 12 tons and its sturgeon meat production was 3,500 tons in last Iranian year (started March 20, 2020) while the country's caviar production was 1 ton and sturgeon meat was 600 tons in 2013 that indicates growth, said the head of Iran Fisheries Organization.

The sturgeon farming has progressed after the ban on commercial sturgeon fishing in the Caspian Sea, said Nabiollah Khonmirzaei, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"Sturgeon production through the cage fish farms in the sea was set on agenda in recent years and we seek to expand this type of farming. Caviar and sturgeon meat produced in Iran has a high price in the world and brings export revenue via Iran Customs Administration," he noted.

The average price of caviar for export is $800 that could even reach $1,200 depending on the packaging.

There are more than 175 active sturgeon farms in 21 provinces of the country and export development can increase production.
