Iran's Textile and Apparel Production and Export Union talks impact of smuggling

TEHRAN, Iran, July 21

Trend:

Iran's textile and clothing production is affected by smuggling, said a board member of Iran's Textile and Apparel Production and Export Union.

"Regarding the effect of smuggling on the industry there is no precise measurement for it, but based on data from Headquarters for Combating the Smuggling of Commodities about $1.8 billion worth of clothing was smuggled in the country until 2018," Majid Nami told Trend in an interview.

"One of the reasons that reduced smuggling was a ban on clothing import in past two years where the government prevented outflow of foreign currency and import of clothing while the increase of foreign currency rate made it difficult for the entrance of smuggled commodities," he said.

Nami went on to add that with the rise of the foreign currency rates it was not profitable to smuggle commodities to the country although there were individuals that choose to smuggle cheap commodities from China, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
