BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 6. About 2 million tons of products were transported through Iran during the 11th month of the current Iranian year (from January 21 through February 19, 2024), the representative of the Central Union of Rural and Agricultural Cooperatives of Iran, Rouhollah Latifi wrote on social networks, Trend reports.
According to Latifi, it indicates the highest level of transit through the country in one month in recent years.
Latifi added that more than 16.2 million tons of products were transited through Iran in 11 months (from March 21, 2023, through February 19, 2024).
"The highest number of transits through Iran in a year was 9 years ago (from March 21, 2014, through March 20, 2015). Thus, 13.2 million tons of products were transited through Iran that year. During the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024), 18.2 million tons of products are expected to transit through Iran," he said.
To note, Iran is located on several international transit routes (North-South International Corridor, East-West International Corridor). Nevertheless, the infrastructure on the trajectory of these routes passing through the country is not fully sufficient, the territory of Iran is not considered a reliable route for international freight companies, and international sanctions have been applied against this country. On this basis, international companies are not interested in transiting through Iran.
