Iraqi President Fuad Masum has welcomed an understanding reached between Iran and world powers on Tehran's nuclear program, calling it a major success for diplomacy, Press TV reported.

On Sunday, Masum issued a statement welcoming the recent agreement expressing hope that the "great achievement" could pave the way for the resolution of other political disputes in the Middle East.

Iran and P5+1 group of countries - Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany -- along with officials from the European Union finally reached a mutual understanding on Tehran's nuclear program after eight days of marathon talks in the Swiss city of Lausanne on Thursday.

The two sides are expected to start drafting a final accord on the issue which is expected to come until the end of June 2015.

Masum expressed hope that the final deal could result in more stability in the region and the world.

"(We) express hope that the two sides could conclude a final agreement soon to open a new phase towards greater security and stability in the region and the world," read the statement, according to the office of the Iraqi president.

Many countries and international organizations have hailed the Iran-P5+1 statement, with many calling it a big victory for proponents of diplomacy across the world. However, the mutual understanding has infuriated Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu branding it a "historic mistake."
