Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant restarts operating

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 23

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in the Bushehr Province (southern Iran) has been reconnected to Iran's electricity grid since June 22, Director of the plant Reza Banazadeh said, Trend reports citing the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran’s official website.

The director emphasized that one third of the nuclear fuel in the plant's reactor has been discharged and new nuclear fuel has been loaded into the reactor.

Banazadeh added that due to a number of preventive measures taken during the spread of the coronavirus, there were restrictions on contact with local and foreign contractors' specialists.

"Due to the restrictions, the company's specialists carried out fuel change and repair work themselves at the nuclear power plant on a scheduled basis," he said.

Banazadeh noted that the Bushehr nuclear power plant is constantly monitored by local regulators, international circles, including the International Atomic Energy Agency and the World Association of Nuclear Operators.

Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant stopped operations on April 12 to change the nuclear fuel. On April 29, new nuclear fuel was imported from Russia in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran and the Rosatom State Atomiс Energy Corporation.

Electricity produced at the 1st power unit of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran began to be delivered to the Iranian electricity grid on Sep. 3, 2011.

Since its commissioning, the first power unit of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant has generated about 43 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which were handed over to the country's electricity grid.
