BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 28. Electricity production at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Bushehr province in southern Iran has totaled more than 65 billion kilowatt hours in the past 10 years, deputy chairman of Iran's nuclear organization and executive director of Iran's Atomic Energy Production and Development Company Hossein Derakhshandeh said, Trend reports.
According to him, more than 90 percent of the mentioned electricity has been supplied to the country's power grid.
Derakhshandeh added that last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024), the Bushehr NPP produced and delivered 7.47 million kilowatt hours of electricity to the country's power grid. More than 11 million barrels of crude oil were saved to produce electricity in this volume, and more than 8 million tons of pollutants were prevented from spreading to the environment.
The official stated that the main goal of Iran's Atomic Energy Production and Development Company is to obtain 3,000 megawatt-hours of electricity from Bushehr NPP. At present, 1 unit of the plant is in operation, and work on the construction of 2 units of 1,057 megawatt-hours each is proceeding rapidly.
Derakhshandeh noted that work on concreting the reactor building of Bushehr NPP Unit 3 will start in the upcoming months and is considered one of the most important steps.
To note, the first unit of Iran's Bushehr NPP began operation in 2011.
The operation of the unit was transferred from the Russian Nuclear Company to an Iranian company in 2013. This unit has produced a maximum of 1,000 megawatt hours of electricity since 2013.
Meanwhile, the construction of Bushehr NPP units 2 and 3 started in 2017 on an area of 50 hectares. If these units are commissioned, each unit will be able to produce 1,057 megawatts of electricity. The commissioning of these two units will result in saving 10 million barrels of crude oil or 1.6 bcm of gas per year and prevent the emission of 7 million tons of polluting gases into the environment.
