Khamenei advisor says Su-24 incident "strategic mistake" of Turkey
Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 26

The incident with the downed Russian bomber is a strategic mistake of Turkey, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's senior military advisor, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) major general Yahya Safavi said, the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) reported Nov.26.
He made the remarks at the meeting of the Basij Resistance Force volunteer paramilitary organization, which took place in the Iranian province of Isfahan with the participation of 10,000 people.
The Turkish Air Force shot down the Russian SU-24 bomber in its airspace Nov. 24. Both pilots managed to eject and the plane crashed on the territory of Syria. Relations between Russia and Turkey have deteriorated after the incident.
Safavi also commented on the political and military processes in the region.
"As a result of devastating wars in the region, 250,000 people have been killed in Syria alone, nine million people have become refugees in Iraq and Syria and they live in very difficult conditions," Safavi said.
Syria has been suffering an armed conflict on its soil since March 2011, which, according to the UN, has so far killed over 250,000 people and displaced nearly half of the population.
