The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has killed five members of an armed group in Sistan and Balouchestan province, south eastern Iran.

Four members of the criminal group as well as their ringleader, Ahmad Sahouei, were killed during an operation by the IRGC's Quds Headquarters today morning, Fars news agency reported April 2.

Murder, armed robbery and extortion are among the crimes committed by the group, according to the report.

Sahouei was a former member of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK). The MEK is a dissident group outlawed by the Iranian government after the 1979 revolution. The group has carried out numerous terrorist attacks on civilians and government officials in Iran over the past three decades.

Commander of the IRGC Ground Forces Quds Base Brigadier General Mohammad Marani said that five weapons as well as ammunition were seized from the armed group.

Iran says the insecurity in Sistan and Balouchestan province is mainly caused by terror groups that usually cross the border into Iran from neighboring Pakistan.

Meanwhile Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.
