Tehran, Iran, May 24
By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:
Ayatollah Ahmadi Jannati, who now occupies the Iranian Assembly of Experts' chair, is full of revolutionary experience, says Kamal Sajjadi, political analyst, spokesman for the Front of Followers of the Line of the Imam and the Leader, which is coalition of Iran's conservative political groups.
Jannati has always been a central figure in major events of the history of the Islamic Republic and is a wealth of knowledge, thus a proper choice for the position, Sajjadi told Trend May 24.
He added that although the political propaganda may try to indicate otherwise, Jannati was chosen by the votes of people's representatives in the Assembly.
The 89-year old conservative Jannati is also a member of the Islamic Republic's Expediency Discernment Council.
The Assembly of Experts is a deliberative body of Mujtahids (Islamic theologians) that is tasked with appointing and removing Iran's supreme leader and supervising his activities.
The recent round of the Assembly election, held last February, was followed by greater sensitivity due to the raised concerns over the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's health condition.
The Assembly of Experts has 88 members elected by the people for an eight-year term.
