Iranian First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri has urged conservation measures to avoid water shortage in the capital city of Tehran, PressTV reported.
After his Saturday visit to Lar and Letian dams in northeastern Tehran, Jahangiri said, "Their water reserves merely suffices for a few days in Tehran; the people should take serious action and manage their water consumption."
Tehran's water is mainly supplied from five key dams, Amirkabir, Letian, Taleqan, Lar and Mamlou as well as nearly 414 deep wells across the metropolis.
Jahangiri noted that the Ministry of Energy is considering plans to revise water prices and cut water supplies to high-consuming users.
"Today's situation is a big message to Tehran's policy makers that Tehran does not have the capacity for more population and its environmental and traffic management needs to be taken into serious consideration," the Iranian vice president pointed out.
According to the Geological Survey of Iran, low precipitation, improper consumption, population growth and urban development are the major causes of water shortage in the capital city.
