Three Iranian police officers were killed in an armed attack Nov. 25 night in Zahak city of the country's southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province.

Commander of Sistan and Baluchestan province police, Brigadier General Hossein Rahimi said that the police officers were patrolling in the city when the incident occurred, Iran's Fars news agency reported.

Unknown gunmen on two cars shelled the police officers with automatic guns, Rahimi said, adding that an investigation has been launched into the case.

In recent months, several armed attacks were carried out on the local police offices by extremist groups, who claim they're fighting against the Iranian government for protection of Sunni residents of the province.

Four police officers were killed in two attacks in Saravan city Oct. 8-9. Iranian officials said that some of the gunmen involved in attacks have escaped to Pakistan.
