Salt – main cause of death in Iran

Salt leads to the death of more people than heroin in Iran, Shahram Rafifar, head of the Office of Health Promotion and Education at the Ministry of Health in Iran said on Dec.24.
He said that the majority of the population dies of heart attack, stroke and cancer, adding that salt is one of the main causes of these diseases, Iran's IRNA news agency reported.
"As a result of the high consumption of salt, three of each 10 people in the country have problems with blood pressure," Rafifar added.
Around 63,000 people get cancer in Iran every year, according to the official statistics. At the same time, 46,000 people die of this disease in the country each year.
Iranian media reported that the real figures on the number of people getting cancer is 90,000-95,000 per year, while the number of those dying of this disease is 50,000-55,000. Moreover, 33-38 percent of the deaths occur due to cardiovascular diseases in the country.
