Baku, Azerbaijan, March 19
By Umid Niayesh - Trend:
One Iranian soldier serving at a police base in the Kourin region near Zahedan city, located in the country's southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, was killed during an armed incident.
The police forces were patrolling in the region when unknown gunmen opened fire at the police car, Iran's official IRIB news agency reported March 18.
As a result of the attack, Mahmoud Bezi was injured and taken to a local hospital. However he later died due to injuries.
In recent months, extremist groups in the province have conducted several attacks against local police offices. The groups claim they're fighting against the Iranian government for protection of Sunni residents of the province.
One Iranian police officer was killed, and two other injured in an armed attack on Jan. 21. Four police officers were killed in similar incidents in the city of Saravan last October.
