Iran introduces new surgery robot

Iran has introduced a domestically made surgery robot.

Showcased at the INOTEX 2015 exhibition in Tehran, the robot is named Sina after famous polymath Avicenna (980 -1037) whose writing included medical essays, of which 40 remain today.

The robot includes a surgery console where the surgeon stands and controls the surgical arms using two sticks, Farzam Farahmand, director of Sina's production project said, Mehr news agency reported June 9.

He said the robot has successfully passed robot-assisted test surgeries on animals and legal procedures are underway to acquire permit for using the machine in human surgeries.

The robot is specially made for abdominal surgery, especially for operating on prostate cases.

He said Iran is the second country after the US to make this class of surgical robots.

The four-day expo is attended by more than 120 formidable technological companies from over 20 countries including Russia, India, South Korea, Belgium, France, Germany, England, Italy, Greece, Romania, Azerbaijan, Pakistan and China, as well as 60 Iranian companies will participate in this event.

The participants are to present their latest technological achievements and innovations in various fields including IT &ICT, oil, gas and petrochemical, hi-tech medicine and biomedical engineering, industrial automation and intelligent system, biotechnology, nanotechnology, renewable energy, aerospace, medical and laboratory equipment, infrastructures, new materials, optics, photonics and laser.
