8 mln Iranians suffer from diabetes

There are eight million diabetics in Iran, says Shakour Omidi, head of an Iranian organization supporting the people suffering from diabetes.

Omidi, speaking in the country's Gilan province Dec. 11 before a Friday's prayer there, said 270,000 people in that province suffer from the disease.

Earlier, Mohammad Alavinia, head of a diabetes treatment department of Iran's Healthcare Ministry, told IRNA agency that over 300,000 people are registered as suffering from diabetes in the country.

He added that however this figure is supposed in fact to be two or three million.
