"Extremists" open fire at parade in Iran; at least 10 dead (UPDATING)

12:05 (GMT+4) Ten people, including a journalist, have been confirmed dead in Ahvaz, the deputy governor of Khuzestan province told Tasnim.

11:43 (GMT+4) According to Iranian media, the number of injured reached 21 people.

11:07 (GMT+4) At least eight IRGC soldiers are reported to have been killed in Iran’s Ahvaz when unknown gunmen, wearing military uniforms, opened fire at a military parade in the southwestern city of Iran.

Seven people, including a woman and a child, were wounded during the attack, Tasnim news agency reported.

Initial reports suggest that two out of four assailants have been so far killed.

The gunmen had opened fire from a park behind the stands during the parade.

State media has described them as 'Takfiri terrorists" - a term used in Iran to refer to extremist groups.

Iran’s Armed Forces staged the countrywide military parades to mark the Sacred Defense Week on the 38th anniversary of the onset of the Iraqi imposed war on the Islamic Republic back in 1980.

10:16 (GMT+4) According to media reports, the assailants are at large and the wounded have been taken to the hospital.

One the attackers, however, has been reportedly killed following the attack.

10:00 (GMT+4) Unknown armed militants opened fire on a military convoy during a military parade in Iran's southwestern city of Ahvaz, Fars news agency reported.

The gunmen opened fire from a park behind the stands during the parade. As a result, a number of Iranian soldiers and civilians were killed and also injured.
