Review of agricultural sector in Azerbaijan (January-November 2010)

Harvesting of most agricultural products has practically completed in Azerbaijan by the end of November 2010. So, according to the data provided by the State Statistics Committee, as of Dec. 1, grain production totaled 2,000,300 tons of which 1,864,200 tons, or 93.2 percent accounted for autumn and spring cereals and grain and beans, 136,100 tons or 6.8 percent - corn.

Torrential rains observed across the country in the spring had a negative impact on cereal production.

In addition to grain, during this period were collected 433.200 tons of melons, 1,178,900 tons of vegetables, increasing by 5.7 percent and 1.5 percent respectively. Potato production declined by 2.6 percent to 953,700 tons.

The autumn-winter field work continues in Azerbaijan for 2011. According to government programs, grain is expected to be harvested in an area of 900,000 hectares. The grain sowing rose by 7.5 percent compared to the same period of last year.

In January-November, a significant and sustained development was recorded in the livestock. Thus, over 11 months, the country produced 303,200 tons of meat of livestock and poultry, 1,400,900 tons of milk, 1081.8 million pieces of eggs, 15,400 tons of wool. Compared to January-November 2009, meat production increased by 8.7 percent, milk - by 7.1 percent, eggs by 0.1-percent and wool - by 3 percent.

The total amount of agricultural production over the ten months of 2010 was 3.429 billion manat, which is 2.7 percent less than the same period of the last year. In particular, livestock production has grown 7.1 percent, while crop production fell by 9 percent. The reason was torrential rains observed in 40 districts of the country, as a result of which 50,000 ha planted areas remained under water.

In November, production prices for agricultural products in Azerbaijan increased by 1.8 percent compared to the previous month (data by State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan).
