Prices and situation in consumer market in Azerbaijan (January-April 2011)

In January-April 2011, a rise of the retail goods turnover got restored amid continuing rise of the community services and was 8.6%. The amount of retail goods turnover comprised 6.4bln. In particular, 69.3 percent accounted for retail sales, 26.8 percent - paid services.

In January-April 2011, the trading networks of Azerbaijan sold population consumer goods at 4.905.0 billion manat, which is 8.3% more than 2010. Legal entities provided 13.0% of turnover, fairs and markets - 42.7%, individual entrepreneurs - 43.6%.

In January-April 2011, the paid service rendered to population amounted to 1.503.1 billion manat, which is 9.4 percent more as compared with 2010. Individual entrepreneurs provided 73.2 percent of services, legal entities - 26.8 percent with growth of 11.2 percent and 4.8 percent respectively.

In January-April 2011, every citizen of the country acquired consumer goods and paid services at 177.6 manat that is 16.6 percent higher than 2010, indicating that the purchasing capacity of citizens has increased.

In connection with the rapid economic development and population growth in prosperity, the Azerbaijanis preferred to global brands for many commodities, including alcoholic beverages, cigarettes and other tobacco products, motor vehicles, etc.

Prices

In April 2011 , the prices for consumer goods and tariffs for services decreased 0.3 percent compared with the previous month, and compared to January-April 2010 grew by 9.0 percent in 2010 (data from State Statistics Committee).

Compared with January-April 2010, food prices in January-April 2011 grew by 13.1 percent, non-food products - by 2.8 percent and tariffs for services - by 3.7 percent.

In April, of paid services rendered to the population, tariffs increased for the international transportation of passengers, as well as transportation to CIS countries by air.

In April 2011, the base index of the consumer prices incurring seasonal changes (fruits and vegetable) and being regulated by the Government decreased by 0.4% as compared to the previous month, and 6.1% to January-March 2010.

As compared to the previous month, in April 2011 the index of industrial goods price increased 6.3%, but rose 23.3% compared to the same period of the last year.

The price in oil and gas production increased 7.5 percent in April 2011 compared to previous month, but increased 26.7% compared to the same period of 2010.

The prices in refining chemical products increased 3.9% in the month, but increased 18.1% annually.

In April 2011, the prices in metallurgy increased 21.5% compared to the previous month, but rose 14.6% during the year. The prices for electricity, gas and water increased 0.1% compared to previous month, but during the year dropped 0.1 percent.

In April 2011, production prices for agricultural products dropped by 0.1 percent compared to March, but rose 13.5 percent compared to the same period of the last year.

Prices for forestry products in April decreased by 5% and during year by 2.2%, for fish and fish products dropped by 2.4 percent compared with March, but by 7.6% during the year.

The total amount of agricultural production in January-April was 676.569 million manat, which is 19.4 percent more compared to the same period of last year.

In January-April 2011, agricultural production in Azerbaijan grew by 5.2 percent compared to the same period of last year, including crop production - 10.5 percent, livestock production - 5 percent.

Cost of forestry goods for the period amounted to 392,000 manat compared to 442,300 manat in January-April last year, the fishery - 56,100 manat compared to 50,000 manat.
