Review of transport sector in Azerbaijan (Jan.-May 2012)

Transport sector of Azerbaijan transported 83.6 million tons of cargo in January-May, which is 3.6 percent more than the same period of 2011, State Committee on Statistics said.

Some 72.6 percent of the goods from the total amount, transported in January-May, fell to the private sector.

Some 52.5 percent of goods were transported by road, 30.1 percent - pipelines, 10.9 percent - rail and 6.5 percent - by sea.

Some 623.2 million people were transported by passenger transport in January-May, which is 9.2 percent more than in January-May 2011. Most of the passengers were transported by road transport (86.2 percent) and metro (13.5 percent).

Automobile transport takes the lion share in the transport field of the country. Some 43.9 million tons of cargo was transported by road transport, which is 7.5 percent more than in January-May 2011. The volume of passenger traffic totaled 537 million (increase by 9.1 percent). Some 96.2 percent of the passengers were transported by buses and 3.8 percent - by cars.

Freight turnover by road during the period grew by 7.7 percent compared to the same period of 2011, and passenger turnover - by 10.1 percent.

The Azerbaijan State Railway Department (ASRD) transported 9.1 million tons of various cargo or 5.5 percent more than the same period of 2011. The number of loaded carriages made up 654 in average per day and unloaded - 523. Average daily load of carriages in the northern direction is 26,500 tons and in western direction 5,900 tons, but in the southern direction - 3,400 tons.

Some 5.4 million tons of cargo was transported by sea in January-May, which is 5.3 percent more than in January-May 2011. The entire volume of transported cargo fell to international operations. The volume of cargo handled at ports of Azerbaijan in January-May amounted to 5.2 million tons, which is 0.8 percent more than in January-May last year.

Some 61.5 percent of cargo shipping fell on oil and oil products, while 38.5 percent on dry cargo. Volume of international transit cargos processed in January-May increased by 3.8 percent. As of June 1, 2012, 40,400 tons of cargo left in the ports for import, which is 42.8percent more compared to the same period of last year.

In January-May, the export via oil pipelines made up 18.9 million tons. During this period, 76.5 percent or 141.4 million tons of oil was transported via the BTC (data provided by the State Statistics Committee). In January-May Sangachal terminal transported 1.38 million tons of Turkmen oil via BTC.

Transportation via gas pipelines made up 8.7 billion cubic meters or 3 percent more compared to January-May 2011. 25% of the transported gas fell on South Caucasus Pipeline. Some 1.8 billion cubic meters of gas was transported via this pipeline.

Some 534,600 passengers were transported by air transport, which is 14.4 percent more than the same period in 2011. Some 1.5 percent of traffic by this kind of transport fell to private sector.

Some 84.4 million people were transported by the subway, increasing by 10.4 percent.

Some 18.5 million tons of cargo was transported through the Eurasian transport corridor at the territory of Azerbaijan in January-April 2012, which is 4.4 percent more than in the first quarter of 2011. Some 86.2 million people were transported through the corridor, which is 7.6 percent more than in January-April 2011.

Transit of cargo through the territory of Azerbaijan totaled over 7.26 million tons in January -May 2012.

The State Customs Committee (SCC) of Azerbaijan has begun to carry out controls in connection with imposing a ban on imports of VAZ 2107, VAZ 2114 and VAZ 2115 cars from May 1, because they do not have anti-lock braking system (ABS) system and air bags.

The Azerbaijani government allocated about $6 billion to implement works on the development of the transport corridor within the framework of CAREC (Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation), Azerbaijani Minister of Finance Samir Sharifov said. He said under the program work to deliver cargo from China, Pakistan and Central Asia to markets in Turkey and Southern Europe via Azerbaijan should be carried out.

A ceremony to launch the Barda ferry, built for the Azerbaijan State Caspian Sea Shipping Company was held at the Croatian Uljanik shipyard on May 10.
