Foreign trade of Azerbaijan (January 2017)

The foreign trade turnover with 121 countries amounted to $1.73 billion in January 2018 or by 38.4 percent more than in January 2017.

The volume of exports increased by 29.1 percent and amounted to $1.04 billion in January 2018 compared to January 2017. The volume of import reached $688.63 million in January 2018 which is 53 percent more than in January 2017.

Azerbaijan exported 992 goods and imported 4,623 different goods.

The black ink of foreign trade balance was estimated at $350.08 million in January 2018, which is by 1.3 percent less than in January 2017.

As in previous periods, oil, gas and oil products were mainly exported from Azerbaijan in January 2018.

Growth was observed in almost all main types of products exported from Azerbaijan in January 2018.

Most of Azerbaijan's exports (84.22 percent) accounted for the export of crude oil. During the reporting period, the country exported oil worth $1.81 billion.

Currently, SOCAR supplies oil from Azerbaijan to more than 30 countries in Europe, Asia and America.

According to the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee, the export of oil products from Azerbaijan decreased from year to year.

The export of oil products amounted to $15.86 million in January 2018, which is by 51.04 percent less than in January 2017.

Some 1.53 percent of the country's total export volume accounted for the export of oil products in January 2018.

Reduction of exports of oil products is associated with the reconstruction of oil refineries in the country.

The positive dynamics is also observed in the volume of electricity exports in January 2018. Despite 0.25 percent accounted for electricity in Azerbaijan's total exports, 60.61 million kW / h of electricity was sold to foreign countries.

An increase in the export of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages was observed in Azerbaijan, which was the result of state support for encouraging the best domestic producers to export their products, especially wines, under 'Made in Azerbaijan' brand to the foreign markets.

So, the country exported alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages worth 595,750 manat in January 2018. Moreover, 0.06 percent accounted for the share in the total export.

The volume of exports of fruits and vegetables which are the basis of agricultural exports of Azerbaijan continues to increase.

The exports of Azerbaijani agricultural products increased by 45.07 percent in January 2018 compared to January 2017.

Tomatoes and cucumbers, as well as walnuts and hazelnuts, cotton, tobacco are exported in big volumes from Azerbaijan.

Agrarian products were exported to Russia, as well as to Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other countries.

The export of Azerbaijani chemical products has again increased. So, export of chemical products increased by 35.66 percent and amounted to $3.55 million in January 2018 compared to January 2017. The share of chemical products was 0.34 percent in the total volume of export in January 2018.

The biggest volume of export accounted for Italy in January 2018. Thus, during this period, Azerbaijan exported goods totaling $280.23 million to Italy which makes up 26.98 percent of a total export volume. Oil and oil products are mainly exported to this country.

Israel ($136.42 million) and Austria $83.43 million) hold leading positions. Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding early three months. Turkey took a lead in January and U.S. in February and March 2008.

Italy and Azerbaijan have excellent bilateral and economic ties. Italy has remained the main trading partner of Azerbaijan, the fourth exporter and the first energy consumer for eight years. As for other sectors, Italy is also represented well in the metallurgical sector of Azerbaijan. The recent agreement signed between Danieli and Baku Steel Company testifies to it. Italian products are valued in Azerbaijan and it concerns not only fashion, furniture, food but also the products in such sectors as mechanics, engineering and technology.

Russia ranks first in terms of the biggest import volume ($125.85 million) in January 2018. Moreover, 18.28 percent of the Azerbaijani imports accounted for Russia ($125.85). Turkey ranks second - $89.07 million and China - third ($65.26 million).

Most of Azerbaijan's imports or 21.94 percent in the reporting period accounted for the import of machinery, mechanisms, equipment, electrical equipment and spare parts. The machinery and equipment worth $151.11 million were imported in January 2018, which is by 41.04 percent more than in January 2017.

The share of chemicals in the total volume of imports in January 2018 was 9.68 percent, in nominal terms this amount was $65.98 million, which is 47.61 percent more than in January 2017.

The increased customs duties on imports of cars, which entered into force from the beginning of 2018, already affected the cost of imports of cars in January, which showed an increase by almost six times.

In January 2018, vehicles and spare parts for vehicles worth $103.59 million were imported to the country compared to $17.82 million (share in total imports - 15.04 percent).

The import of butter, meat and dairy products greatly has been increasing for the reporting period.

In particular, the cost of imports of meat increased by 45.82 percent, milk - over twofold and butter - by 23.89 percent in January 2018 compared to January 2017.

During this period, 3,568 legal and physical entities were involved in foreign trade operations, including 2,362 - legal entities and 1,206 - individuals.

The share of public sector in exports totaled $942.85 million, private sector -$92.62 million, the share of individuals - $3.23 million.

The share of public sector in import operations amounted to $164.32 million, the private sector -$488.17 billion, individuals - $36.14 million.
