Germany fears Libya intervention would fan extremism

Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle continued Tuesday to defy pressure from France and Britain on military intervention in Libya, saying any foreign interference in North Africa would play into the hands of extremists, dpa reported.

"We don't want to get sucked into any war in North Africa," Westerwelle repeated as the foreign ministers of the Group of Eight (G8) countries continued a second day of talks, mainly on Libya.

Any Western-led military intervention "would lead to a weakening of the democratic movement in North Africa," he said. "We want the opposite: a strengthening of the democratic movement."

The poorly-armed rebels fighting Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi's regime have called for a no-fly zone to be imposed over Libya to halt airstrikes by the regime and protect civilians.
