Protests in Yerevan against transit price hike

A "warning protest" in response to transit fare hikes has taken place in Yerevan, panarmenian.net reported.

Protest participants threw 50 dram coins at the entrance of the municipal building; after which, they blocked the entrance to the building, but police pushed them aside.

An advisor to Mayor Albert Gevorgyan came for negotiations with protest participants and journalists, but he was also pelted with coins. Gevorgyan was offended and went back into the building.

Protests are continuing.

The price for public transport in Yerevan has increased by 50 percent from 100 to 150 drams since June 20.

"We are not protesting, asking for anything or even demanding, we are warning that, we will not obey this unreasonable decision; the majority of the Armenian population will pay the old price for transport." the organizers of the protest wrote.

The official exchange rate for July 19 is 411.0002 AMD /USD.
