Georgia to Toughen up Visa Regime at European Union Recommendations

Georgia will toughen up the visa regime in the country at the recommendations of the European Union and International Migration Organization within the next few months. According to information from the Georgian Parliament, the International migration Organization developed a document which criticized the visa regime in Georgia. The organization warned that if the country did not strengthen its control over migrants then jobs allocated for Georgians abroad may be filled by citizens from Asian countries.

Furthermore, Georgia does not inform about the number of people coming into the country which may lead to disorder in the country. Those people may be engaged in criminal activities.

Currently, all foreigners receive an entry visa at the Georgian border. But, in compliance with the current developed draft law, foreigners will be able to obtain a visa only from Georgian Embassies in their countries. Short-term tourist visas will be given at the border. There will be four types of visas for which there should be documentary evidence attached.

"Today, we have the possibility to implement business, particularly; in Poti where we will open a free trade zone. We can control people coming to Georgia," Nino Nakshidze, the Chairman of the Committee on European Integration of Georgian Parliament, stated.
