Georgia Offers to Announce International Control in Galsk Region

Georgia, Tbilisi, 14 July / corr. Trend N.Kirtzkhalia / The Abkhazian Supreme Council demands to announce the Galsk region of Abkhazia as internationally controlled zone, Temur Mzhaviya, the chairman of the Abkhazian Supreme Council in exile, said.

Residents of the region appealed to the Georgian Government for assistance on 10 July. They stated that humanitarian catastrophe was expected in the region due to lack of food and consumer goods, because administrative border was closed between Abkhazia and Georgia two weeks ago. The Georgian people, which comprise 95% of Galski region, used to acquire from Zugdidi border.

"We have sounded this demand and asked the international organizations to take into consideration the tough condition of the Georgian people, who suffer not only the security problems, but also starvation," Mzhaviay said.

"It is important to announce this region an internationally controlled zone, in order to draw the attention of international organizations to this unprecedented illegality zone of the 21st century," he said.
