Georgia opens the first asylum seekers centre, the Office of UN High Commissioner for Refugees said.

In particular, the Centre's opening is scheduled for June 21 in the village Martkopi. According to the UN Office, each year about 50 asylum seekers appeal to the Georgian authorities. The High Commissioner for Refugees and the Ministry for Refugees actively cooperated to establish a permanent reception and centre, where seekers will be accommodated.

For this purpose, a building was rehabilitated by the Ministry of Economic Development in the village Martkopi. The village is located 15 km northwest of Tbilisi. The project cost amounted to 616,667 lari. The project was financed by the EU and the U.S. Department of State.
