Azerbaijanis in Georgia faced with an acute problem of water shortage for irrigation, Chairman of National Movement in Georgia "Geyrat" ("Honour") Alibala Askerov told Trend.

According to unofficial sources, about 500,000 Azerbaijanis live in Georgia.

"This year, the entire Azerbaijani population of Marneuli district in Georgia faced with the problems of irrigation," Askerov said.

He said that some residents receive water from sources originating in the territory of Armenia. It is very difficult to pass to this country to remove problems on the canals. "The rest of the residents of Marneuli region are using other canals.

Despite the implementation of programs to improve the welfare of rural residents in Georgia, irrigation canals in Marneuli are in a terrible state. The canals have not been cleaned for decades and do not pass water, "Geyrat" chairman said.

He said that numerous appeals of the local population gave no results.
