Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II and Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili made a joint appeal for the disaster affected people in the Kakheti region (Eastern Georgia) from the cathedral church in Telavi.
The patriarch appreciated the government's efforts and personally asked Mikheil Saakashvili to address the consequences of the disaster and reassured his flock not to worry, because "the government will provide assistance to all those affected".
The Patriarch said that the entire country of Georgia had risen to help the disaster affected regions, including Kakheti.
According to Saakashvili, the victims will receive food rations and cash compensation, their houses will be repaired, tuition fees of students at universities will be postponed and repayment of bank loans will also be deferred.
The disaster raged in three regions of Georgia - Kakheti, Mtskheta-Tianeti and Samtskhe-Javakheti on Wednesday night. A total of over 30,000 families were affected by the disaster.
