Georgia, Tbilisi, Sept. 26 / Trend N. Kirtzkhalia /

The Georgian Interior Ministry has issued a statement on recent events in the country.

'Unfortunately the acts of violence occur more often', the statement said. 'Individuals working with political parties were often involved. Despite the calm situation in the past, after the scandalous tortures in prison, the situation worsened. There were acts of aggression, intimidation, threats and in some cases violent actions. Threats and attacks on public officials and supporters of political parties were made'.

In this case, the Interior Ministry said that although the majority of political actions are peaceful, the behaviour of the activists of some political parties during the election period causes problems, a statement said.

The ministry named the recent specific facts. 'The police were obliged to respond when the physical safety of our citizens was at risk', the statement said.'"No detention was politically motivated. It was a reaction to certain incidents. The police continue to protect the law'.

The parliamentary elections in Georgia will be held on Oct. 1.
