Poti Port workers hold protest action

Georgia, Tbilisi, Oct.9 /Trend, N.Kirtskhalia /

About 120 workers at the 14th berth of Poti Port held a protest action demanding better working conditions, ensuring better safety and higher wages.

The protesters said they were employed as the so-called reserve, out-of-staff. They say they have to work 12 hours a day without a break with a salary of 4 lari ($1 = 1.65 lari) per hour which is very little.

The workers make claims in connection with occupational safety. According to them, the port has no obligation towards the workers in case of any accident.

The protesters also demanded employment contracts, establishing a fixed salary, as well as providing them with the same privileges and benefits that permanent employees of the port enjoy.

However, the workers' protests were ignored. The administration of the berth and port did not reply to them.
