Defence Ministry: Georgia to continue its mission in Afghanistan

The last stream of the 23rd Battalion of the second land brigade participating in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan will return to Georgia tonight. Some 246 Georgian servicemen will return with this stream.

The last stream of the 23rd Battalion of the second land brigade participating in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan will return to Georgia tonight. Some 246 Georgian servicemen will return with this stream.

Georgian Defence Minister Irakli Alasania, Acting Chief of Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces Vakhtang Kapanadze and U.S. Ambassador Richard Norland met them at the airport.

As Alasania said, Georgia will continue its mission in Afghanistan. "We are glad because our military, who perform their mission in strengthening global security, return home. Georgia will continue to fulfil its mission in this country," he said.

There are 900 Georgian military in Afghanistan. Their number will increase up to 1600 in November, after sending an additional battalion to Afghanistan.

Georgian soldiers serve in one of the most dangerous areas in terms of terrorism, the Afghan province of Helmand. Georgia has already lost 18 men killed whilst serving in the NATO mission.
