The government and the president must reach an agreement on the appointment of an individual, who will enjoy confidence and properly perform his duties, to the position of chief of joint staff, U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Richard Norland, told journalists on Tuesday.

The government and the president must reach an agreement on the appointment of an individual, who will enjoy confidence and properly perform his duties, to the position of chief of joint staff, U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Richard Norland, told journalists on Tuesday.

According to him, they are holding consultations with the Georgian government on this issue and they believe that an agreement will be reached.

"The elections are over, but at the moment Georgia is experiencing political transition period. We want the process to take place under the requirements of law and be a subject to the rule of law during arrest of any person. We are monitoring these processes. It is important for NATO, who leads the armed forces of Georgia ," Norland said.

The former chief of joint staff of Georgian armed Forces Giorgi Kalandadze was arrested and has been charged due to mistreatment of soldiers.
