Former Georgian Defence Minister Irakli Okruashvili was detained at the border as a wanted person and placed in jail No.8 in Tbilisi, Georgian Justice Minister Tea Tsulukiani said at a briefing.
She said Okruashvili is the one being accused and will have to prove the serious charges against him are untrue.
At the same time Tsulukiani stressed that the Georgian parliament recognised Okruashvili as a victim of political persecution by the former government.
"But there is a specific criminal case and he must answer for it," Tsulukiani said.
Former Georgian Defence Minister Irakli Okruashvili returned home on Tuesday morning.
On March 28, 2008 Okruashvili was sentenced to 11 years in prison for abuse of authority and embezzlement of budget funds. After that, he managed to escape to France and get political refugee status there. Later he was charged with creating illegal armed groups.
