We regret the election processes used on the local level in Georgia, U.S. State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary for Human Rights and Democracy, Thomas Melia said during a briefing held in the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi.

"The U.S. believes that the elected leader must serve for the term to which he was elected," Melia said.

He noted that he had information regarding reports of possible pressure on local authorities.

"Monitoring of the process is implemented by civil society and examined by the Ministry of Justice. Processes used by local governments are subject to our general regret, we hope that there will be progress in this direction in the future," Melia said.

He added that the U.S. is closely monitoring the transition process.

Melia noted that his visit is a continuation of the visit which took place about three weeks before the election. He will meet with representatives of the past, and the current government, including Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili and President Mikheil Saakashvili.
