The Speaker of Georgian Parliament David Usupashvili has signed the law 'On amnesty' on Saturday taking advantage of the right given to him by law.
The law will come into force following publication in the 'Legislative herald' on Saturday.
The speaker exercised his right after President Saakashvili refused to sign the law for the second time.
The law 'On amnesty' was approved by Georgian Parliament on December 21, 2012, however the Georgian president vetoed the part of the law relating to political prisoners and those who have committed crimes against minors on December 27. The legislative body overcame a presidential veto on December 28 sending the law for signature to the president again.
At a briefing on Friday Usupashvili said that decent conditions were not created for detainees in prisons and the decision on amnesty was taken by the new government as a confession of the state's guilt in this.
Usupashvili noted the recognition of existence of political prisoners and those who are persecuted for political reasons in Georgia.
"From now on, no one will be prosecuted for their political views and different opinions," the speaker said.
According to preliminary information, people recognized by Georgian parliament as political prisoners will be the first ones to leave prisons after the law enters into force. The Ministry of Corrections will then in two weeks send the cases of remaining prisoners to a court to determine articles under which the detainees are charged. The courts will have two months to review all cases.
