The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) started monitoring the cases of former senior Georgian officials.
The case against former Interior Minister Bacho Akhalaia was first to be monitored.
"Monitoring this trial is a powerful tool to support judicial reforms and fair justice," Director of the OSCE Office, Ambassador Janez Lenarcic said in Tbilisi on Wednesday. "I am sure that observation activity will support the consolidation of democratic institutions."
The ODIHR observation group will assess local legislation and compliance of the court protocols with international legal standards and publish a report, which will reflect any shortcomings found in the monitoring process. Relevant recommendations will be given.
