Georgia, Tbilisi, March 18 / N. Kirtskhalia /

The trial of former Georgian Defence Minister Bacho Akhalaia and seven others charged along with him starts today in the Tbilisi City Court.

This decision was made by the judge at a preliminary hearing on March 5.

Bacho Akhalaia and seven others accused along with him refused any legal investigation of their case by jurors at the preliminary court hearing held on March 5.

"We do not want this case to be heard by the jurors, as each person has pre-formed a certain attitude and this might have a bad effect on the decision over this case," Bacho Akhalaia's lawyer Malkhaz Velidzhanashvili said.

The lawyer states that certain allegations were wrongly brought against Akhalaia.

It can be recalled that the former Defence Minister and other seven others along with him were accused of abuse of power and illegal imprisonment.
