Georgia’s further participation in Afghanistan’s mission discussed in Brussels

Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Pandzhikidze participates in a NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels.

Pandzhikidze also participated in the ISAF meeting, held bilateral meetings within the ministerial meeting, the Georgian Foreign Ministry told Trend on Wednesday.

She met with NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai. The sides discussed the relations between Georgia and NATO and the country's further participation in the peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan.

Pandzhikidze added that Georgia will continue to participate in the operations in Afghanistan after 2014.

"At this stage, there are some 1,700 Georgian servicemen in Afghanistan," she said. "The peacekeeping format in Afghanistan will be changed from 2014 and we will continue cooperating with NATO in this direction in the new format."

Appathurai said that the special attention is paid to the subsequent stage after 2014.

"We have paid great attention to Afghanistan," Appathurai said. "I thanked Georgia for its contribution to the peacekeeping operation and expressed regret over the casualties. Next month we will know the NATO position and we hope that Georgia will be part of that process."

Pandzhikidze also met with German counterpart Guido Westerwelle, Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird, UAE Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash within the ministerial meeting.
