Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office becomes independent from Justice Ministry

Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia gained independence from the Ministry of Justice

Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia gained independence from the Ministry of Justice, Minister of Justice Tea Tsulukiani said at a press conference on Tuesday.

According to her, all prosecutorial powers were transferred to the Prosecutor General Archil Kbilashvili, who will be fully responsible for the appointment of prosecutors.

Under the new law, the Ministry of Justice of Georgia is forbidden to interfere in any criminal case pending in the proceedings of the Prosecutor General's office.

A General Inspectorate will be established at the prosecutor's office. It will be responsible for the activities of prosecutors.

The power of arresting high-ranking officials and suing criminal charges against them also goes into the competence of the prosecutor's office.
