The Tbilisi City Court found the ex-Defense Minister of Georgia Bacho Akhalaia innocent on an episode of torture and ill-treatment of commandos.
The matter occured during Akhalia's period of service as the minister of defense. The former head of the Joint Staff Gigi Kalandadze, former commander of the Fourth Infantry Brigade Zurab Shamatava and former commander of land-forces Alexandr Gorgadze were also accused alongside with Akhalaia.
They are accused of torture and inhuman treatment of the soldiers, for political reasons.
The court found that the commandos passed the ordinary survival program and they were not subjected to torture because of their political views.
Despite of the discharge, Akhalia remains in prison. He is also being accused of abuse of power during a prison riot, when he was chairing the Department for execution of punishments, and also for suppression of several citizens' freedom.
