Georgian parliament increases president’s salary

Tbilisi, Georgia, Dec.28
By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

The Georgian parliament increased the president's salary on Friday night. The president will receive 6,900 lari instead of 4,500 lari ($ 1 = 1.73 lari).

President Margvelashvili's net salary will hit 5,400 lari.

Majority leader David Saganelidze is the initiator of increasing the Georgian president's salary.

It should be stressed that the salary was initially set at 9,000 lari but later it was found that the president of a democratic country can not have a salary higher than that of the chairmen of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts.

As the parliament did not want to raise the supreme judges' salary, which is 7,000 lari, the president's salary was made accordingly.

President Margvelashvili stressed that this amount is necessary to implement the president's powers, although he used to live modestly.
