Georgian Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze, Finance Minister Nodar Khaduri and Chairman of the Steering Board of Georgian State Electric System, Sulkhan Zumburidze signed an agreement on April 29.
Georgian State Electric System and its subsidiary, EnergoTrans will construct a high voltage substation of 550-220 KV and double circuit lines of 220 KV and 500 KV, according to the document.
Portugal's EFACEC is the contractor for construction of the Djvari substation of 500-220 KV, while India's Jyoti construction company will construct the transmission line.
The goals of the project are: to improve the reliability of the 220 KV network and diversify the power supply sources of West Georgia; improve the reliability of power supply of the free industrial zone in Poti and to ensure the full control of the Kavkasioni power transmission line.
The implementation of the project will enable to create a flexible and profitable power exchange network in Eastern Georgia, will substantially improve the quality and reliability of local and international service and, most importantly, the issue of investment for construction of hydropower plants in the Inguri gorge will be removed from the agenda.
The total cost of the project is 50 million euros. The project is financed by the Bank for Reconstruction and Development of Germany, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Neighbourhood Investment Facility (NIF).
The implementation of the project will begin in 2014 and will be completed in 2016.
